A furniture that changed the world: the manufacturer Stokke and its bestsellers.

A furniture that changed the world: the manufacturer Stokke and its bestsellers.

1972 was the year of the birth of two revolutions, both coming from Scandinavia and with catchy names: ABBA and Tripp Trapp. But while the music of the band from Sweden today sounds like a bygone era, the Tripp Trapp has hardly lost its relevance and significance. For its manufacturer, the Norwegian company Stokke, the children's chair marked the beginning of a new era - but the history of the furniture producer begins much earlier.

Women and designers as employees in a craft company: In the 1930s, that was like a revolution. And the fact that a small family business in the Norwegian Sunnmøre Alps, of all places, drove this social change was largely due to the forward-thinking nature of its founder, Georg Stokke. It was not to be his last vision!

Founded out of necessity
in 1932, Stokke initially devoted itself to manufacturing high-quality living room furniture. Chairs like the Swing Star from 1965 were style-defining and innovative in their day - today they are sought-after design rarities. But the all-changing moment was the 1972 collaboration with Oslo designer Peter Opsvik. It was to make Stokke one of the most important manufacturers of children's furniture. Opsvik had designed a chair for his son Tor because, during a family dinner, he realized that he could not adjust the seat height of a child's chair to that of the adults. This left the child out of communication. His chair innovation Tripp Trapp allowed his son to finally sit comfortably at the table - at eye level. And the intelligent, adaptable design, with seat and foot plates adjustable in height and depth, also accommodated children's growth. A furniture revolution that has sold ten million units worldwide to date.

All about innovation
The success of the Tripp Trapp marked the first step in a change of course for the company, but it still remained loyal to seating solutions for adults and office furniture. In 1999, the next blockbuster followed with the Sleepi crib, which fit perfectly into the Stokke world because of its flexibility and minimalist design. Just like the high chair, the object can be varied in height and shape, thus adapting to the age and size of the user. While the oval, nest-like shape may seem classic in nature at first glance, it stood out from similar products at the time of release and became an additional guarantee of the crib's success. Other market revolutions such as the Xplory stroller followed, and finally led to the company's decision in 2006 to shift entirely to the creation of high-quality children's products. With its focus on children's equipment in the high chair, stroller and nursery segments, Stokke has a unique selling point as a representative of Scandinavian design - but the company is in no way resting on this comfortable position: The goal continues to be innovation and the search for perfect products for children.
